Remember last year when each time we revealed our monthly Yarn Club batch, you were sad that you hadn't signed up for it?  Well we're back, so you have another chance to get some gorgeous yarn in your mailbox each month.  This year there are only two opportunities for you to support the Fibres Student Association in this way.  So sign up for a three-month subscription before September 26th to receive yarn in your mailbox in October, November and December, or between September 27th and December 23rd to receive yarn in your mailbox in January, February and March.  Remember this isn't just any yarn; it's luscious hand-painted-by-us yarn.  It doesn't get better than that!

Above is the Yarn Club's March 2011 batch which was a 100% merino wool, lace weight yarn naturally dyed with indigo

Fundraising initiatives by the FSA help us to fund visiting artists, student exhibitions and educational trips :)

The above pic is a page from the awesome little natural dye 'zine made by Kelly Thompson's Structures 340 class, and spearheaded by her TA Johanna Autin.  Johanna held a natural dye workshop and we all went home with wonderful samples of fleece dyed with Marigold, Henna, Sumac, Tumeric and Hibiscus - all things easily found here in Montreal  (I shared process photos on this blog post back in October).  Everyone in the class was responsible for creating a page in the 'zine.  See the entire 'zine here.

Thanks Johanna for all you hard work on this project!

merino wool, hand-spun and hand-dyed with hibiscus flowers
The FSA is so grateful to you first subscribers, so we are showing our appreciation by starting off with a bang.  Don't worry this doesn't mean the next ones won't be as yummy, they will.  I am calling this colourway Dusty Rose.  It is hand-spun merino yarn dyed with hibiscus flowers.

bellow are some process photos of it being dyed.  You might be surprised by the colours you see in the dye pot, but alas that is testament to the tricky business of natural dyeing.

Natural Dyeing

10/15/2010

We had a day of natural dyeing in Structures class last week and I got really inspired for the first batch of the Yarn Club.  Although I cannot give away any specifics until our subscribers have received their batch, I can tell you that I'm super excited about the colourway I've chosen.  Hint:  It is not shown in the form of fibre in the above pictures.
